The quality of films submitted for the 24th Warner Roadshow Studios Queensland New Filmmakers Awards (QNFA) suggests that the future of the Queensland film industry is in very safe hands, Screen Queensland CEO, Maureen Barron said today while announcing the 2010 finalists.

“The panel of industry judges had a very tough time selecting the best of the best from more than 100 entries, with film students from Griffith University, Bond University, QUT and JMC Academy generating particularly high entry rates,” said Ms Barron.

Presented by Screen Queensland, the Warner Roadshow Studios QNFA recognise and encourage the achievements of emerging Queensland filmmakers and provide an opportunity for them to connect with industry experts.

Previous winners of the biggest new filmmaker competition in Australia have had their work showcased at some of the world’s leading festivals including Cannes Film Festival and include Ivan Sen (Beneath Clouds) and Michael and Peter Spierig (Undead, Daybreakers).

“I congratulate all the 2010 finalists and look forward to seeing their careers develop within the Queensland film industry in the coming years,” said Ms Barron.

Some of the finalists announced today included nominees for the Warner Roadshow Studios QNFA for Best Overall Film, which attracts a prize of $3,000:

Aminal - Elise Kowitz

Anonymous - Eros Romero

Hardcore Mode - Kieran Ricketts

Lesbian Vampire Killers - Killian Maguire and Emilie Hollins

Lola the Magnificent - Heather Cassidy

Not A Willing Participant - Alex Barnes

O is for Obedience - Karen Miley

The Foal - Jade van der Lei

The Time We Are Given - Suzannah O’Brien

Today’s Cowboys - Kacie Anning

The International Film College Award for Most Promising New Filmmaker was also announced today with finalists in the running for a $1,200 prize of facilities and/or training:

Jared Bazley - Outstanding Cinematography for Quiet: You’ll Wake Up The War, The Time We Are Given and Sea Strangers

Halimi Brothers (Ahmad and Morteza) - I and Nostalgia

Peter Ireland - Blueberry Lane and Practically Wasted

Annika Salisbury - Today’s Cowboys and Lola the Magnificent

The QNFA industry sponsor panel will now judge finalists’ films before announcing the winners at the Warner Roadshow Studios QNFA Ceremony on Friday 6 August at The Tivoli. Over 30 awards will be presented at the Ceremony.

A selection of films from this year’s competition will be screened on Saturday 31 July at Tribal Theatre. Tickets will be available from the box office for $8 with sessions at 1pm and 3.30pm.

Visit the QNFA webpage at www.screenqueensland.com.au for a full list of finalists and event details.
