Description
An opening title tells us that this film is based on the life of Nolberto Coria, who also plays the lead character, Beto, a middle-aged Mexican Indian caretaker. But this beautifully made, measured, and quiet film from first-time director Enrique Rivero lasts with the viewer long after it ends. Beto lives alone, caring for a large house that has been on the market for many years. We watch his careful domestic routine interrupted by little more than the nightly crime news. He is perhaps agoraphobic, rarely seen outside the grounds and visited only by La Señora, who owns the house, and Lupe, a sex worker. What, then, will happen to him when the house is sold and he needs to find new employment? The gulf between the rich whites and the poor Indians is huge, and the tension builds.
